The HEAL and CHARM studies bring together an incredible team of researchers, coordinators, and collaborators from across Canada, all working to better understand how our diet, activity, and environments shape health and equity. We asked the team: “What aspects of the HEAL and CHARM studies are currently the most exciting or rewarding for you to work on?” Here’s what they had to say.
Rachel Murphy
HEAL & CHARM Study Lead

“I like working in a team. HEAL and CHARM bring together a fantastic group of researchers, staff, students and participants from across Canada. I feel really lucky to work with and learn from this group.”
Favourite food: Sushi
Favourite form of movement: I love to run. It helps me clear my head and decompress after long days. I live in Vancouver, and it’s one of the prettiest places to log some km’s.

Favourite form of movement: I love mindful workouts that build strength and flexibility, like pilates and yoga, and adventurous activities that push me out of my comfort zone, like rafting and stand-up paddleboarding.

“I enjoy working with and learning from smart, kind and passionate people who want to make things better for all. This study has so much potential to really change diet and activity research in Canada because of the depth and breadth of information participants are providing.”

Favourite form of movement: I enjoy weight training and really like going for walks outside – it’s amazing the effect it has on my mental health. Have to really force myself when it gets a lot colder out!

“I’m most excited about collaborating with leading experts in dietary health and contributing my expertise in biomarkers to the study. It’s inspiring to bring together different areas of knowledge to better understand how diet impacts health.”

Favourite form of movement: Definitely need more movement in my life, but, when I get the chance, my favourite thing is to hike old growth forests.

“What I enjoy most about working on CHARM is turning big ideas into real plans, from shaping study materials to connecting with participants. It’s inspiring to know our work will help answer important questions about health in Canada.”

Favourite form of movement: It’s hard to choose only one as I love almost all types of movment, but I am currently enjoying swimming the most.
