CanPath collaborates with Okta to strengthen security in Canada’s largest population health platform

New integration strengthens CanPath’s secure research platform with advanced login protection and easy-to-manage workspaces.
Toronto, September 3, 2025 – For Canadians who take part in health research, trust is everything. That’s why CanPath, Canada’s largest population health study, is partnering with Okta to add even stronger privacy protections to its Trusted Research Environment (TRE), powered by Lifebit. With Okta’s secure identity technology, participants can be confident their personal information stays safe while researchers continue making discoveries to improve health for everyone.
CanPath’s TRE is a secure, cloud-based platform that allows researchers to study Canada’s health data without ever downloading or removing sensitive information. Instead, researchers log in and work within a protected digital environment, ensuring that participants’ data stays private and safe.
“This collaboration represents another step forward in our commitment to protect participant data while enabling cutting-edge research,” said Dr. Jennifer Brooks, Executive Director of CanPath. “By integrating Okta’s trusted technology into our TRE, we’re building a modern and secure system that puts privacy first while giving researchers the tools they need to make discoveries that benefit Canadians.”
Okta brings proven expertise in digital identity and security. Its technology ensures that only the right people can access sensitive systems, making it easier to manage researcher workspaces while adding extra layers of protection.
“Okta is proud to work with CanPath to strengthen the security of Canada’s largest population health study,” said Ryan Sydor, Area Vice President of Okta Canada. “We secure identity, so everyone is free to safely use any technology. By supporting CanPath’s Trusted Research Environment, we’re helping researchers focus on their work while participants can be confident that their personal information is protected.”
Lifebit, which hosts and powers the CanPath TRE, highlighted how Okta’s involvement further enhances an already world-class research infrastructure.
“Lifebit is committed to providing researchers with secure, easy-to-use platforms for health discovery,” said Maria Dunford, CEO of Lifebit. “By adding Okta’s advanced identity solutions, CanPath is raising the bar for research data security in Canada and setting an example internationally.”
This enhancement comes before the TRE is rolled out more widely to the Canadian research community. CanPath’s forward-looking approach ensures that privacy safeguards and secure access systems are already in place, positioning Canada as a leader in responsible health data research.
Just as participant trust is the foundation of CanPath, security is the foundation of its research platform. With Okta now part of the TRE, Canadians can know their data is protected, today and in the future, while helping drive discoveries that improve health across the country.
